Granville Academy North Carolina hosted the Granville Academy National Youth Conference in Greensboro, North Carolina during the week of March 2-5, 2006. The conference was held the Sheraton Greensboro Hotel/Joseph S. Koury Convention Center and also on campus at North Carolina A&T State University. Approximately 135 students and parents from Connecticut, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia attended our conference and the event was a tremendous success. We express our sincere thanks to Mr. James Garrett, of SENTEL/Dimensions International, Mr. Clint Allen of Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Mr. Marvin Pittman from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for taking the time to come to Greensboro and sharing their knowledge and wisdom with our future corporate and community leaders. We also want to express our gratitude to Dr. Velma Speight-Buford, Dr. Janice Brewington, Doug Kilgore, Shirley Frye, Sunnie Howard-Wharton, Candy Carter, April Cobb and the entire Aggie family at North Carolina A&T State University for embracing the young people of Granville Academy. North Carolina A&T gave our students a very powerful demonstration of the "Old School" and the "New School" way of touching Children of Color and also gave us an addictive taste of "Aggie Pride". NOTE! Several Granville Academy students from Virginia, Connecticut and New Jersey became a part of the student population at North Carolina A&T in the Fall of 2006, as a result of their conference experience at Greensboro in March of 2006. Our conference objectives were strategically implemented and successfully achieved by the loving and caring business and educational leaders that freely shared their knowledge, wisdom and experiences with our students. Those objectives were: To provide a venue for youth to interface and encourage one another as they prepare for the world of capitalism and economic empowerment. To introduce and expose Granville Academy students to mentors who are some of the highest-ranking African Americans in corporations and in the entrepreneurial world. To focus students toward key areas of learning...namely, the global economy, technical outlook, financial management and the environment. To reinforce the fact that education, knowledge, wisdom and marketable skills are the foundations for effective participation in the economic mainstream of America and the global economy that we now live in today. To expand national awareness of Granville Academy as a vehicle for preparing students for capitalism, motivating their peers and providing services to their communities. Students that attended the conference were exposed to a wealth of information and experiences that will truly add to their academic pursuits. These students were encouraged to return to their respective communities and share what they had learned with their fellow students so that individual and community empowerment could be achieved. Granville Academy is a national after-school coaching and mentoring program. This innovative program teaches business, science, and technology with emphasis on community development and character building to youth in grades 8 through 12. The 2007 Granville Academy National Youth Conference will be held in Princeton, New Jersey during the week of March 22-25, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency Princeton. 2005 Conference in Baltimore, Maryland
